Summer in Rancho Santa Fe

Twenty-five miles north of San Diego, tucked into a stretch of rolling hills, there’s a one-of-a-kind town.

In summer, when the rest of the coast is at its busiest, this little community offers the perfect summer retreat only a few miles from the beach. Looking to plan your slow summer? Save up to 25% on weekday stays at Guesthouse Hotel at La Valle with our Weekday Bliss offer. Sunday through Thursday, May–September.

Now, keep reading to discover six reasons why summer is the best time to visit, and what to do once you arrive.

1. The Weather Is Unmatched

Rancho Santa Fe sits in a sweet spot—about six miles inland from the Pacific, but high enough in elevation and protected enough by surrounding hills to feel like its own microclimate. Summer days hover in the high 70s to low 80s. Mornings start cool and a little misty. Evenings are made for outdoor dinners and cardigans.

You get the warmth without the swelter, and the coastal proximity without the marine layer that can hang over the beach towns until afternoon. It’s the kind of weather that lets you actually being outside.

2. The Village Itself Is Worth a Day

The historic village in a Spanish Colonial style has aged into something genuinely beautiful. Plastered adobe walls, red-tile roofs, climbing bougainvillea, trees and arched walkways.

Spend a slow morning wandering through galleries, independent boutiques, and bookshops. Stop for an espresso at one of the village cafés. There’s no pressure to do more than that—and that’s the appeal.

3. Some of San Diego County's Best Restaurants Are Right Here

Rancho Santa Fe has a notable food scene. You’ll find longtime institutions where the menu hasn’t changed in decades because it never needed to, alongside newer spots run by chefs who left bigger cities for the slower pace and better produce.

Summer is when this all works best. Tomatoes are at their peak. Local farms supply nearly everything. And midweek tables are easier to come by, avoiding long waits.

4. The Trails Are Open, Empty, and Stunning

The San Dieguito River Park, the Del Dios Highlands Preserve, the Lake Hodges trails and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve are all within easy reach. So is Crosby Estate trail, the Rancho Santa Fe loop, and the famed Elfin Forest a short drive away.

In summer, start early—before nine—and you’ll have most of the routes nearly to yourself. Coastal sage scrub, oak canyons, and panoramic views of the Pacific in the distance. Bring water, wear a hat, and you’ll understand why locals talk about these hills the way other people talk about famed national parks.

5. It's Horse Country—and You Can Be a Part of It

Rancho Santa Fe has one of the densest concentrations of equestrian properties in the country, and the culture is woven into everything. You’ll see riders cutting through trails, polo matches at the nearby Surf Cup grounds, and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s iconic summer racing season.

Even if you’ve never been on a horse, a guided trail ride through the hills at sunset is one of those rare experiences that reminds you California used to look very different—and in pockets like this, still does.

6. The Beach Is Still There—Just Quieter

You’re a 15-minute drive from Del Mar, twenty from Solana Beach, and twenty-five from Encinitas. All three offer some of the best stretches of coastline in California, and from a Rancho Santa Fe basecamp, you can be there before the parking lots fill up and back at the pool by lunch.

This is the underrated genius of staying inland: you get the beach when you want it, and an escape from the beach when you don’t.
